Mills Closes on $1.9 Billion Refinancing

ARLINGTON--The Mills Corporation, a developer of retail destinations, has closed on $1.91 billion of previously announced billion financings with Goldman Sachs Mortgage Company. The proceeds were used to pay off the company's existing line of credit, two term loans, and various construction loans. The remaining funds, approximately $387 million, will be used for working capital and general corporate purposes. More.

Focus Sold to Quest for $185 Million

HERNDON-Focus Diagnostics, a provider of infectious disease tests, has been purchased by Lyndhurst, N.J.-based Quest Diagnostics Incorporated in a cash transaction valued at approximately $185 million. Excluded from the transaction is Focus Bio-Inova, Focus Diagnostics' pharmaceutical testing operation. Said Quest CEO Surya N. Mohapatra: "Focus Diagnostics has been recognized worldwide for its leadership in infectious and immunologic diseases and its expertise in developing new diagnostics."

Asset Capital Sells Hollymead Parcels

CHARLOTTESVILLE--Asset Capital Corporation, Inc., of Bethesda, Md., has agreed to sell 40.7 acres of its Hollymead asset in Charlottesville for an aggregate purchase price of approximately $42.6 million or $1.05 million per acre. Asset Capital originally purchased Hollymead, a 78-acre parcel, in August 2005 for approximately $668,000 per acre.

DULLES-AOL LLC has acquired Lightningcast, Inc., a Washington, D.C.-based pioneer of broadband video advertising. Founded in 1999, Lightningcast and its 34 employees will report to AOL's Advertising.com subsidiary in Baltimore, Md. Lightningcast's technology platform provides flexible solutions to owners and distributors of broadband video and audio content including seamless ad insertion, campaign management, and reporting.

RICHMOND--Alloy Polymers, Inc., a manufacturer of thermoplastic compounds, has completed the acquisition of the Texas operations of Ampacet Corporation, of Tarrytown, N.Y. The addition of the 352-unit, 1973-vintage property brings the total of multi-family units owned and managed by Bonaventure in Hampton Roads to nearly 900.

RICHMOND--Cavalier Telephone & TV, a provider of telecommunications services in the Mid-Atlantic, has launched advanced MPEG-4 technology to deploy TV services over a broadband connection in Richmond, making it the first telcom nationally to deploy the technology. Hokies Launch "Synthetic Biology" Research Group


BLACKSBURG--The Virginia Bioinformatics Institute has established a research group that will focus on the emerging field of synthetic biology. The announcement coincides with the recent arrival of Dr. Jean Peccoud, a computational biologist from Pioneer Hi-Bred International. Synthetic biology involves the design and construction of new biological parts, devices, and systems as well as the redesign of existing, natural biological systems for useful purposes. The field has attracted much attention due to recent progress towards the goal of building chromosomes by significant remodeling of the genomes of bacterial organisms. More.



New River Launches Phase Three Trials for ADHD Drug

RADFORD--New River Pharmaceuticals Inc. has initiated screening for a Phase 3 clinical trial for its NRP104 compound for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in adult populations (ages 18 to 55). Market data estimates that 8.5 million adults in the United States suffer from ADHD, and that 75 percent of these people remain undiagnosed, under-treated or untreated.

CHARLOTTESVILLE--Researchers from the University of Virginia Health System have found that ondansetron, a serotonin antagonist drug, reduced cocaine's reinforcing effects in the 63 volunteers who participated in the study. These findings are the first to show the value of ondansetron in battling cocaine and its addictive qualities.

Retail Sales. The pace of retail sales growth in Virginia has edged up over recent months. For the year ending with March 2006, retail sales rose by 6.7 percent in the state. Although the state pace of retail sales growth has ticked up over 2006, it has fallen below the national pace. Since last March, retail sales increased by 7.9 percent in the nation.

Archaearium Debuts Jamestown Artifacts

JAMESTOWN-A new exhibition at the Archaearium at Historic Jamestowne is displaying objects belonging to Jamestown colonists 400 years ago, unearthed from the long lost James Fort site. Open in time for Jamestown's 400th anniversary in 2007, the $4.9 million Archaearium is the centerpiece of a $63 million master plan for Historic Jamestowne created with the National Park Service that includes a new visitor center with a 360-degree theater and exhibits about Jamestown's history and the Indians, Europeans and Africans who lived there. Plans also include a riverside restaurant, enhanced visitor transportation and outdoor exhibits. More.

Rail Rip-off

Extending METRO rail to Dulles Airport will enrich select landowners to the tune of billions of dollars. Why, then, are Fairfax County commuters being forced to pay so much of the project cost?

The proposed extension of the Washington METRO system to Dulles Airport is one of the most expensive infrastructure projects ever conceived in the state of Virginia. The projected cost is $4 billion, assuming no expensive delays or overruns. "Rail to Dulles," as the project is known in shorthand, is vitally necessary for the economic health of Northern Virginia. But, as currently conceived, the project would precipitate a multibillion- dollar transfer of wealth from taxpayers and commuters to politically powerful land owners.
