During that period, employment in Roanoke advanced by 2.8 percent ( 4,123 jobs) compared to a 2.5 percent ( 85,656) gain for the state.

Employment trends in regional labor markets are often the best overall measure of economic performance. While statistics relating to output growth, such as real gross domestic (state) product, are considered the most comprehensive performance figures for states and the nation, these data are not available for localities. Republican Blues

The GOP has more than the Democrats to worry about. The Party is struggling from internal divisions, as seen in the convention battle in Virginia's 10th Congressional District.

In the 1974 Congressional elections, held in the aftermath of the Watergate scandal and resignation of President Richard Nixon, the Republican Party was decimated.

Some political pundits are questioning whether the 2006 elections could wreak the same sort of havoc. Although Democrats have tried to pin a series of "scandals" on the Administration of President Bush, none have caught fire. Common sense would suggest that, absent a major scandal between now and November, the GOP should be safe.

But this may be a hasty assumption.
