Lockheed Martin Breaks Ground on New Virginia Facility

CHANTILLY--Lockheed Martin has commenced construction of a new office building in Chantilly, Stonegate II, which expands the company's operations in support of the defense and intelligence communities. The six-story, 145,000-square-foot building will house approximately 600 employees. Work performed there will include space and terrestrial communications, signals, systems engineering and analysis, modeling and simulation, and enterprise integration for Intelligence Community customers. Merillat Creates 150 Jobs in Shenandoah County

MOUNT JACKSON--Merillat, Inc., manufacturer of kitchen and bath cabinets, will invest $16 million to expand its Mount Jackson facility. The expansion, which will create 150 new jobs, is the company's third Virginia expansion in less than two years. The Michigan company distributes its cabinets throughout North America. More


Auto Parts Company Expands in Botetourt

BOTETOURT--Dynax America Corporation, a Japanese auto parts manufacturer and North American subsidiary of Exedy Corporation, will invest $11.7 million to expand its existing facility in Botetourt County's Eastpark Commerce Center. The company will create 52 new jobs. Said President Koji Akita: "The Roanoke Valley's strategic location, the quality of the workforce and the local infrastructure were also critical factors in the decision to increase our investment in Botetourt County." SNL Buys New HQ Building for Indian Operations

CHARLOTTESVILLE-SNL Financial, a provider of news, data and analysis for the financial information marketplace, has purchased a building in Ahmedabad, India, to serve as the headquarters for its Indian subsidiary. Since beginning operations in 2003, SNL's Indian staff has grown to 150 employees. The new facility has room to accommodate up to 375 employees in a single work shift. More.

ASHBURN--AeroAstro, Inc., a developer of small satellites, will design and build the spacecraft bus and provide integration, launch and mission operations support under a six-year contract with Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp., which won a $110 million contract for the defense department's Space Test Program Standard Interface Vehicle. The contract supports procurement of up to six small, low-earth-orbit satellites to fly space experiments. More.

Lockheed Martin to Upgrade Canadian Submarine Technology

MANASSAS-Lockheed Martin has won a contract from the Canadian Department of National to begin refreshing technology in the Submarine Fire Control Systems deployed in Victoria class submarines. Media General to Spend $600 Million for Four NBC Stations

RICHMOND--Media General, Inc., has agreed to purchase four NBC-owned and -operated television stations from NBC Universal in a cash transaction valued at $600 million. The stations are located in Raleigh, N.C., Columbus, Ohio, Birmingham, Ala., and Providence, R.I. The purchase represents a marked departure from the company's strategy of focusing operations in the Southeastern U.S., preferably in markets that overlap with newspapers where the company's television-print-Internet convergence strategy could come into play.

Said CEO Marshall N. Morton: "This transaction is compelling from both an operational and financial perspective. The NBC properties we are purchasing are strong stations in cities with attractive growth prospects. ... While the Columbus and Providence stations ... are outside the Southeast, our station portfolio will benefit from their strength in audience and revenue share and from their position in growing, larger-market DMAs." Sunrise to Collect $90 Million from Contract Cancellation

MCLEAN--Sunrise Senior Living, Inc., an operator of senior living facilities in North America and Europe, will receive $90 million from Five Star Quality Care, Inc., for the exercise of Five Star's contractual rights to cancel 10 management contracts. The buyout is not related to Sunrise's performance at any of the communities. More.

Alpha Natural Resources to Buy Kentucky Coal Assets

ABINGDON--Alpha Natural Resources, a major Appalachian coal producer, has agreed to acquire coal mining operations in eastern Kentucky from Progress Fuels Corp., of Raleigh, N.C., for $23 million, plus adjustments and assumption of $8 million in mine reclamation liabilities. The properties own roughly 73 million tons of steam coal reserves, producing three million tons in 2005. Said CEO Michael J. Quillen: "This acquisition will more than double our reserve base in eastern Kentucky." More.

Primary Integration Buys Colorado Distributed Energy Business

HERNDON--Primary Integration, a technology, engineering and energy services company, has acquired the distributed-energy business of Colorado-based Encorp through an asset acquisition. Cadmus Acquires Last Chunk of KnowledgeWorks

RICHMOND--Cadmus Communications Corporation has purchased the remaining 20 percent of KnowledgeWorks Global Limited, boosting its ownership to 100 percent of the content-services business. KGL, which has operations in Mumbai and Chennai, India, was formed in 2003 as a joint venture with DTL, a business- process outsourcing services provider in India. HERNDON--Parallels has commenced beta testing for Parallels Workstation 2.1 for Mac OS X, the first software that gives Apple users the ability to simultaneously run Windows, Linux and other applications alongside Mac OS X on an Intel-powered Apple computer. RICHMOND-Archadeck, the largest deck-building company in the United States, is promoting Ipe (pronounced ee-pay), a dense hard wood from South American that resists cupping, splintering and twisting, as a premier decking material. Also called ironwood, Ipe does not shrink like pressure-treated lumber, and should last more than 25 years. "Many homeowners we talk to are initially interested in composite materials and don't know much about Ipe," says Ed Repak, director of construction and drafting. Wahoos Devise New Tool to Attack Brain Cancer


CHARLOTTESVILLE-Two University of Virginia professors have developed a specialized catheter capable of delivering cancer-fighting drugs to precise spots in the brain. George T. Gillies and Joseph A. C. Humphrey, in partnership with William Broaddus at Virginia Commonwealth University, developed the technique as a way to circumvent the blood-brain barrier, which thwarts traditionally delivered drugs from reaching the brain. The double-tube catheter has three microcoils at the tip that enable it to be guided magnetically to a specific location. More.

BLACKSBURG--A researcher at the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute at Virginia Tech is developing a database and computational tools to help scientists learn more about how certain genes in tomatoes affect the fruit's flavor and nutritional value. Said Harry Klee, a horticultural scientist and chief investigator: "The development of this database will allow researchers the world over to develop and test hypotheses regarding the regulation of flavor, nutrition and quality metabolites in edible crop tissues." Virginia unemployment.. The unemployment rate has trended downward for both Virginia and the United States since mid-2003. In February, the state unemployment rate stood at 3.0 percent, the second-lowest rate in the nation, while the national unemployment rate rested at 4.8 percent. Virginia's unemployment rate in February was the lowest since April 2001.

New Virginia Law Simplifies Telephone Taxes

RICHMOND--Gov. Timothy M. Kaine has signed legislation that updates and simplifies the state's complex system of communications taxes. Virginia's citizens currently pay the nation's highest rate of combined state and local communications taxes for their telephone service -- averaging 30 percent, more than twice the national average. The new law reduces that rate by eliminating four existing communications taxes and replacing them with a low, five-percent rate across the board for all communications services. More.
