Waaah! Sensitivity Alert
New Movie Mean to Americans with Food Allergies

FAIRFAX-Hollywood's latest offering, "Monster-in-law," is "an insensitive and vindictive portrayal toward individuals with food allergies," charges the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network. In the movie, which ironically debuts during Food Allergy Awareness Week, the Jane Fonda character sets out to derail her son's marriage by serving mashed-up nuts to her unwanted daughter-in-law, played by Jennifer Lopez.

Not only does the movie make light of the food allergies, it also sets the stage for "copycat" incidents where kids may think food allergies are funny and imitate Jane Fonda's character - just to get a laugh, says Anne Munoz-Furlong, CEO of FAAN. Food allergies, which kill 150 to 200 Americans each year "are no laughing matter." More.

Antidotes

Land use myths are propagating like a virus: Find a cure for one, and new mutations multiply. Here, we offer three approaches for quarantining these bad ideas.

The superficial political wangling that heralds fall elections in Virginia is heating up. During this period you will note an order-of-magnitude jump in the propagation of statements supporting the common myths that lead to dysfunctional human settlement patterns. Like pathogens which mutate and become drug resistant, the fragments of thought that support, reinforce and maintain debilitating myths continue to evolve. This is why it is essential to treat the generation of sound bites and silly statements that perpetuate myths just as the medical profession attacks contagious viruses. More.
